ICEHOUSE /
a contemporary conversion
concept
The scope of this renovation project is to provide a meaningful conversion for the recently rediscovered icehouse at Oudergem. Extensive historical research gave us more insight into the history of icehouses, and on the history of the construction site. Next, a detailed inventory of the different types of degradation was made in order to be able to link the possible causes. This will provide certain boundary conditions in order to minimize their destructive effects on the conversion. The assessment of degradation includes salt deposition, frost degradation, and biological action. Another aspect which is taken into account is the urban framework, how it developed throughout history and its current shape. Most importantly the contemporary value of the structure is evaluated.
conversion
Historically the reconversion is both linked to the long history of icehouses and to the former brewery “La Chasse Royale”. This brewery was of major importance in Etterbeek as well did the icehouses: providing ice in order to keep the beer cold. Therefore, the oldest of the two parts is converted to a beer-tasting room. The history of the brewery will be displayed, and the original beer can be tasted here. Furthermore, this function can be linked to an already existing trail, providing an additional cultural sight. An additional trail is composed, connecting the most interesting pieces of cultural heritage.
