about

THE CREATIVE STREET /

a self-organizing mechanism

context

Through the rapid growth of the urban area of Shanghai building lots are sprawled with large towers, generating vast landscapes of tarmac at their feet. These desolated spaces lack any kind of identity and the no man’s land is often occupied by cars. How can this dead terrain be transformed and densified into a vibrant community space, leaning more towards the tradition of the shikumen housing, with which these massive towers are in sharp contrast? This problem applies explicitly to the plot located next to the campus of Tongji University where an area sprawled with students would be expected to be vibrant.

concept

The scope of this intervention is to create a more interconnected system of parcels with a wider variety of functions and add a layer of infrastructure allowing for a more fine-grained system.

A fundamental proposition is the concept of self-organization. For this specific case, only certain rules are drawn, generating a framework wherein the particular buildings are products of local initiative. To be able to estimate the random behavior of these local initiatives within the proposed framework, a digital model is composed, generated random geometry within the specified boundaries.
