STANDAERT HOUSING /
a suburban intervention
context
The need for housing is increasing in Flanders. To preserve the open space, it is necessary to densify the existing centers. The densification although is not sufficient to decrease the pressure on the countryside, but how can we increase the density and simultaneously keep these centers liveable?
concept
The program includes the housing of families with children as they make up the most demanding group. The two vacant parcels are connected by an inner area. By organizing the houses at the street-line, the entire inner area is kept unoccupied for various public functions. Because of this specific design choice the buildings are designed specifically as portals, providing access to this inner area, each with a very different character. The main entrance located on the east side of the parcel is shaped by two corner buildings, finishing the row housing. A smaller more subtle, secondary entrance is located at the north side of the parcel. The organization of a qualitative passage combined with housing on a small parcel asked for an inventive solution.
